What is Jyotish?

Jyotish — the 'eye of the Vedas' — is one of the six Vedangas, the auxiliary disciplines of Vedic knowledge, mapping planetary positions at the moment of your birth into a Kundali. Unlike Western astrology, it uses the Sidereal zodiac, centres the Moon and Lagna over the Sun, and includes Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes. Its Dasha timing system indicates not just what is encoded in your chart, but when those themes will become active in your life.
The 12 Rashis
बारह राशियाँ
The twelve Rashis (राशि) divide the zodiac into 30-degree segments, each governed by a ruling planet, element (fire, earth, air, water), and quality (cardinal, fixed, mutable). Jyotish uses the Sidereal zodiac anchored to actual star positions, so your Vedic Rashi may differ from your Western Sun sign by an entire sign. Understanding the Rashis — from Mesh (Aries) to Meen (Pisces) — is the alphabet of the birth chart, colouring every planet and house it touches.
The Navagrahas
नवग्रह
Jyotish recognises nine Grahas — Surya, Chandra, Mangala, Budha, Guru, Shukra, Shani, and the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu — each governing specific domains of life from vitality and mind to career and karma. Every planet occupies a sign and a house in your birth chart, casting its influence according to its natural qualities and placement. Knowing the Grahas is essential to reading any Kundali.
27 Nakshatras

The 27 Nakshatras are lunar mansions that divide the zodiac into finer 13°20' segments, each with its own deity, symbol, and psychological character. Your Janma Nakshatra — the mansion occupied by the Moon at your birth — reveals your instincts, emotional nature, and the deeper texture of your personality beyond the Rashi. The Nakshatras are especially important for compatibility matching (Kundali Milan) and for the Dasha timing system.
Dasha & Timing
दशा काल
The Vimshottari Dasha system divides life into a 120-year sequence of planetary periods — each planet ruling for a fixed number of years in a set order, starting from the Nakshatra of your natal Moon. These Dashas explain why certain phases of life feel expansive or contracting, and when particular karmic themes become active. Combining Dasha periods with transits gives Jyotish its remarkable precision as a timing and predictive tool.
